Software Freedom Day 2006

Many thanks to the organizers of the Software Freedom Day, especially Paul Schulz who without his efforts the event may not of happened. Also the Air-Stream Team Chris, Chris, Kat, Kim, Paul, Ryan, Shawn and Simon for their efforts to ensure Air-Stream Wireless was well represented. More click here…

The Software Freedom day was a great success, with many interested people asking questions about Air-Stream Wireless how to get connected and what was the best equipment to use.

Chris and Shawn set up a link to Pooraka providing both an Access Point (AP) and a direct feed for the software freedom day event. The rig was fully portable mounted on a tripod running on a 36AH gel-cell battery Pack allowing it to be located near the event where access to the larger AS network could be established and also being able to relayed to the event.

The AP used the Air-Stream FreeBSD customization Flash Router distro running on a WRAP2 providing three interfaces two wireless (backbone and AP) and the other Ethernet which ran 20 meters to the event where it was patched into a wired network on-site.

There was also more wireless fun to be had with Kim and Simon form the Air-Stream Mesh Group experimenting with OpenWRT wireless APs and OSLR.

Capping it off with Ryan’s real world demonstration of the construction a customized router destined for his Uleybury Node. All housed a commercial waterproof housing using a convention P4 motherboard, which he will mount up the mast at Uleybury.
